How Twitter is going to grow in Sweden

Twitter is planning to start courting Swedish publishers in order for the social media network to grow in the Scandinavian country.

The announcement—that Twitter is seeking to expand its operation in Sweden—was made by Rowan Barnett, senior director, market development & media at Twitter, during a seminar at the media conference Meg in Gothenburg Thursday, attended by this Smashdig reporter.

Twitter is looking to collaborate with Swedish publishers in the same way as the social media network works with other news outlets around the world.

In the initial stage, Twitter’s sales company, Sellbranch, will head up the launch together with, most likely, one person working on a freelance basis.

Less than 25 per cent of Swedes using the internet has tried Twitter, according to the report Svenskarna och internet. Twitter’s growth has also slowed down around the world, according to several reports.

However, these statistics don’t show all the non-registered users who are using Twitter or people who see embedded tweets in news articles and on blogs, Barnett said in his talk Thursday.

Footnote: Smashdig will publish a longer interview with Rowan Barnett in the near future. We talked about Twitter’s plans for video content, its Swedish expansion and how they are going to do it.
